“You don't talk about money”

Why Financial Literacy Is Becoming a Matter of Customer-Centricity

You’re not supposed to talk about money? That’s exactly the problem. In Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, money is still generally considered a private matter.

People don’t like to talk about it openly. Not within families, not in the workplace, not among friends, and not in public. All of this carries over culturally to institutions such as the education system.

The result is not a moral one, but a structural one: financial literacy remains patchy. And this gap has a direct impact on the financial industry—on companies, product lines, services, technologies, and processes.

Because when people don’t understand money, they make decisions based on emotion rather than reason: they avoid, postpone, or ignore issues; they react under stress; or they lose trust.

This doesn’t just affect traditional banks and insurance companies. It also impacts payment providers, BNPL models, subscription-based commerce, and digital platforms—in short, the entire value chain of the financial industry.

The key question, therefore, is not “How can we explain money better?” but rather: How can we create products, processes, communication, and services that empower people to make better decisions even without a degree in finance?

Focus on the Operational Realities of the Industry

  • Usability and Comprehensibility of Products and Digital Journeys

  • Communication in Critical Situations (Price, Inflation, Interest Rates, Payment Terms, Reminder Stages)

  • Service Design for Stressful Situations

  • Payment and Accounts Receivable Management as a Matter of Trust, Not Just Efficiency

  • Technology & AI as a New Layer of Translation and Interaction

The Customer Focus Spotlight brings industry insiders together to discuss precisely this perspective: financial education as a key motivator for better customer experiences and as a lever for reducing friction, escalations, and bad debt. And it combines this with a visit to Vienna Kaiser Wiesn.

Concise. Practical. Discursive. On September 24, 2026, at Quartier Sechs on the Austria Campus in Vienna.
