Robbie Hunter-Paul: “We don’t rise to the level of our goals, we fall to the level of our systems”

Robbie Hunter-Paul brought energy, humour and powerful perspective to the stage with a keynote that blended elite sport experience with practical wellbeing strategies. Opening with a memorable story from his early rugby career, he illustrated how strong leadership and an engaging environment can unlock confidence and performance, even in moments of doubt. That lesson carried through his entire talk, reinforcing that culture, connection and support are the foundations for individuals and teams to perform at their best.

Performance and wellbeing are built on the same foundations

A central theme of Hunter-Paul’s session was the deep connection between wellbeing and performance. Drawing on real data from workplace programmes, he showed that when people feel better, they perform better, and the tools required for both are largely the same. From mindfulness and sleep to digital habits and stress management, he emphasised that small, consistent actions can have a significant impact. His message was clear: organisations that invest in their people’s wellbeing are not just supporting individuals, they are directly improving performance and outcomes.

Building habits that actually stick

Moving from theory to action, Hunter-Paul focused on the importance of systems over motivation. Rather than relying on willpower alone, he outlined simple, practical ways to build sustainable habits, from two minute routines to habit stacking and environmental design. In a fast paced, always on world, he encouraged the audience to take control of their routines and create space to reset, whether through breathing techniques, movement or structured daily habits. His closing message was both practical and empowering: real change comes not from big intentions, but from small, repeatable systems that shape behaviour over time.
