Prof. Dr. Armin Grunwald studied physics, mathematics, and philosophy. Since 1999, he has been Director of the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Since 2002, he has also served as Head of the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB). In addition, he has been Professor of Philosophy of Technology and Ethics of Technology at KIT since 2007.
He has been a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) since 2009 and has served on acatech’s Executive Board since 2014. From 2014 to 2016, he was a member of the German Bundestag’s Commission on the Storage of High-Level Radioactive Waste. He served on the Ethics Commission on Automated and Connected Driving of the Federal Ministry of Transport in 2016/2017. Since 2020, he has been Co-Chair of the National Citizens’ Oversight Committee for the Search for a Repository Site, and from 2021 to 2025 he has been a member of the German Ethics Council.
His areas of expertise include the theory and methodology of technology assessment, the ethics and anthropology of digitalization and artificial intelligence, technology ethics, and sustainable development.
